Slack key guitar master Makana to perform in Waimea

Kahilu Theatre in Waimea presents “Makana, Live” from the Kahilu stage at 7 p.m. on Friday, performing vocal and slack key guitar renditions of classics from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.

For years Makana performed with legends including Joe Walsh, Santana, Bad Company, Sting, Elvis Costello, Leon Russell, Eddie Vedder, Gotye, Jason Mraz and Chris Isaak. He has since then created a repertoire of his own favorites, sung in English and played in his unique style of slack key guitar.

Makana is a singer, composer, and master of the Hawaiian slack key guitar tradition. As a child, he learned directly from legends like Bobby Moderow, Raymond Kaleoalohapoina‘oleohelemanu Kane and Sonny Chillingworth. His original music has been featured on three Grammy-nominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy Award winning film “The Descendants.”
