WAIMEA — Hawaii Preparatory Academy held its 50th annual Ka Makani Soccer Classic from Friday through Sunday.
The double-elimination tournament played host to eight boys teams and eight girls teams — both local and from other islands. Local teams included HPA’s boys and girls, Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i girls and Hilo High boys.
Visitors included Island School (Kauai), King Kekaulike High (Maui), KS-Maui, Maui High, KS-Kapalama, Pac-5 (O‘ahu), Mid Pacific Institute (O‘ahu), Castle High (O‘ahu), Kaiser High (O‘ahu) and Campbell High (O‘ahu).
On the girls’ side, KSH and HPA each finished above .500 — as Ka Makani won the third-place match and the Warriors won the consolation championship.
HPA opened with a 3-2, penatly shootout victory over Castle on Friday. On Saturday, Ka Makani was routed 7-0 by Campbell — which went on to defeat Kaiser 1-0 during the championship match on Sunday. HPA bounced back with a 2-1 victory over King Kekaulike to win the third-place game.
After falling 3-2 in a PK shootout to Kaiser during Friday’s opening round, KSH won two straight and shut out its opponents to claim the consolation title.
The Warriors downed Mid-Pacific 2-0 on Saturday, then notched another shutout on Sunday — defeating Maui 3-0.
HPA’s boys came even closer to the tourney title than its girls.
Ka Makani came out hot, crushing Maui 6-1 in the opener.
On Saturday, HPA won 1-0 against Pac-5 to earn a championship bid — but fell 4-2 to Mid-Pacific in the title match.
Hilo only played one game during the tourney, taking KS-Kapalama’s place in the third place match when the Warriors were unable to finish the tourney.
The Vikings fell 3-0 to Pac-5. King K defeated Island School 4-2 to win the consolation championship.
Regular season soccer matches begin this week — with matchups such as Waiakea girls versus Konawaena, Parker boys versus Hilo, Kea‘au girls versus Kealakehe, HPA girls versus KSH and more.
