GIRLS: HILO 9 – KEALAKEHE 0

Hilo High’s girls soccer team crushed Kealakehe 9-0 in mercy rule fashion Tuesday afternoon at the UH-Hilo soccer field.

This was the Vikings’ third straight shutout, fourth 9-0 victory and seventh shutout overall on the season. Goalkeeper Tayahlia Kepoo-Deconte was credited with the shutout for Tuesday.

Hilo got ahead early as Maiya Kepoo-Deconte scored an 18-yard goal around the one-minute mark.

Two minutes later, Naliipoaimoku Harman headed in a six-yard goal — assisted by Sera Varize’s corner kick.

The Waveriders managed to keep the Vikings at bay until the 20-minute mark, when Hilo knocked in two more goals in rapid succession.

First, Kryslynn Nabarro broke away from Kealakehe’s defenders to score a 20-yard goal. Then, Nabarro assisted Kepoo-Deconte on another 20-yarder.

Up 4-0 at the half, Hilo kept up the pressure emerging into the second period.

At 46 minutes, Leilillian Solomon-Ho‘opai hit a six-yard goal. Nine minutes later, La‘aulu Kalauoka‘ae‘a-Kahele scored a goal from 20 yards out, assisted by Varize’s corner kick.

Nabarro and Sharlatte Chartrand both scored goals within a minute of each other, around the 62-minute mark.

At 72 minutes, Solomon-Ho‘opai hit the go-ahead goal from 25 yards.

Hilo moved to 8-0-1 on the season, and has only allowed one goal total while scoring an average of 6.67 goals against BIIF opponents. The Vikings were ranked No. 10 statewide in ScoringLive’s most recent poll.

Just two matches remain for Hilo, both of which will be against cross-town rival Waiakea High (7-0-0) — which is also contending for the top standing in BIIF Division I.

The Warriors will first host the Vikings at 3 p.m. on Friday at WHS’ Ken Yamase Stadium.

Hilo will then cap off its regular season Jan. 19 at the UH-Hilo soccer field, facing Waiakea for the second time.

Kealakehe fell to 3-5-0, but still stands at No. 3 of BIIF DI’s five teams. The ‘Riders well next face DII powerhouse KS-Hawai‘i (3-0-2), at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Kailua-Kona.

BOYS: KHS 2 – HILO 1

Kealakehe’s boys soccer team defended its No. 1 standing with a narrow, 2-1 win over Hilo on Tuesday at UHH.

With the loss, Hilo fell to 5-2-0 — but still stands firmly at No. 2 in BIIF DI.

The Vikings’ next outing — and final of the regular season — will be Jan. 19 against Waiakea High at the UH-Hilo field.

The ‘Riders are now 6-0-0, and were ranked No. 7 statewide in this week’s ScoringLive poll.

Kealakehe’s next test will be Saturday, when it will return to the leeward side to take on undefeated, defending DII state champion KS-Hawai‘i (5-0-0).

The Waveriders will cap off the season with a pair of road matches, at Kea‘au High (Jan. 16) and Parker (Jan. 20).
