The Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i girls soccer team fell just short in the HHSAA DII state championship, losing 1-0 to Pac-Five in a penalty kick shootout after two regulation periods and two overtimes without a score on Saturday night in Waipahu, O‘ahu.
The Wolfpack outscored KSH 5-4 in PKs.
The loss ended what was otherwise an amazing postseason for the Warriors, who won their third straight BIIF DII title and blanked their previous two opponents in the state championship quarterfinals and semifinals.
KSH held off an aggressive Pac-Five offense throughout the match. The Wolfpack totalled 20 shots on goal during regulation time, and Warriors goalkeeper Lahela Cootey notched ten saves.
This was Pac-Five’s third straight DII state tile. Last year, the Wolfpack knocked KSH out of the DII state quarterfinals.
It was also KS-Hawai‘i’s first state title match appearance since 2019 — when the Warriors fell to Hawaii Prep.
Hilo
The BIIF DI champions fell from the state championship falling 2-1 to Baldwin High in a consolation bracket match on Friday.
Hilo started off in the lead as Aneala Sibayan scored a goal during the first half of the game, but the Bears scored twice in the second half to get the win and secure a berth in Saturday’s fifth place match.
The Vikings ended tournament play 0-2, falling 2-0 to Mililani in the quarterfinals on Thursday after receiving a first-round bye. Hilo’s final overall record after the postseason is 11-3-1.
Waiakea
Waiakea High also suffered its second straight loss in the state tourney, losing 1-0 to KS-Maui on Friday.
The match was tied 0-0 until the second half, when KSM scored its lone goal.
WHS finished 1-2 in the tourney and 12-4-0 overall — routing Kapolei High 3-0 in the first round on Monday in Hilo, then falling to Campbell High on Thursday on O‘ahu.
Hawaii prep
Ka Makani defeated Kalani High 2-0 to win the DII fifth place consolation match.
Madie Buczyna scored a goal at the 37-minute mark, and Caroline Betlach scored at the 64 minutes.
After beating Seabury Hall 4-0 in the first round on Wednesday, Ka Makani fell 4-0 to Pac-Five in the quarterfinals Thursday and entered the consolation bracket.
HPA won its first consolation match on Friday, defeating Leilehua High 4-3 thanks to a pair of goals by Madie Buczyna, a goal by Mixtli Lindsey-Robles and another by Nina Cipriano.
Ka Makani concluded the tournament 3-1, its final season and postseason record closing out at 8-5-0.
