BIIF volleyball: Dragons handle Lions, ‘Riders get first win

The Big Island Intescholastic Association’s boys volleyball season kept rolling, as three matches were played Tuesday night around the isle.

HONOKA‘A 3 – MAKUA LANI 0

Honoka‘a High’s boys volleyball team traveled down to Kona on Tuesday night to handled business, defeating Makua Lani Christian Academy in Old Airport’s Kekuaokalani Gymnasium — 25-20, 25-11 and 25-20.

The Dragons’ teamwork, communication and accuracy at the net proved to be too much for the Lions, who showed a strong fight for the match’s entirety.

Honoka‘a will aim to build off its big win in its next match against Ka‘u — with first serve slated for 10 a.m. Saturday in Pahala. Makua Lani is still in search of its first win of the early season, and will additionally next play the Trojans at 5 p.m. March 26 in Kailua-Kona.

KEALAKEHE 3 – WAIAKEA 0

Kealakehe’s boys varsity squad earned its first win of the season Tuesday in the Waveriders’ gymnasium, beating Waiakea 25-16, 25-21 and 25-22.

Now at 1-2, Kealakehe will look to reach .500 against KS-Hawai‘i in its next matchup — slated for 11 a.m. Saturday in Kea‘au. The Warriors (0-2) will seek redeption against Hilo at 6 p.m. tonight in the Vikings’ gymnasium.

PARKER 3 – KA UMEKE 0

Parker’s team notched another win Tuesday on the road against Ka ‘Umeke — winning 25-6, 25-19 and 25-22.

While Ka ‘Umeke got comfortable and improved in every set, the Bulls’ talent was too much to overcome.

Parker (4-1) will next take the court against Ka‘u at 5 p.m. Friday in Pahala. Ka ‘Umeke (1-2) will try to bounce back against Honoka‘a after a couple-week break — playing 5 p.m. March 29 in the Dragons’ gymnasium.
