Police arrested and later released a 48-year-old Ocean View man following an alleged nonfatal shooting.
Daniel Moriarty was arrested Monday on suspicion of second-degree assault for allegedly shooting a 49-year-old man Friday with a rusty black-powder revolver.
The victim’s sister reportedly told police that her brother is mentally ill. He had twice been contacted twice earlier by officers responding to different disturbances. The officers allegedly saw blood on the man, who twice refused medical assistance and was deemed “uncooperative” by police.
The victim’s sister requested medical attention for her brother.
The victim reportedly told police he had been assaulted by several men, and went to Moriarty’s house for help. The man said he had knocked on Moriarty’s door and was told to leave “before I shoot you.” The man told officers Moriarty pulled out a black handgun with a long barrel and shot him.
The victim believed the gun was a black-powder gun because there was a delay from when the trigger was pulled and it had smoke come out of the barrel. The victim was then taken by ambulance to Kona Community Hospital where it was determined that a bullet was lodged in the victim’s right thigh. There was no damage to any bones or arteries and the injury was described as a “gunshot wound to the right lateral thigh with muscle damage.”
West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives served search warrants on Moriarty’s home on Monday, and found a rusty black-powder revolver.
Moriarty was apprehended without incident Monday and released without being charged pending further investigation on Tuesday, police said.
