HILO — The Hawaii Cycling Club hosted its 6th Annual Hilo Hill Climb Training Time Trial on Saturday, July 6, marking yet another successful race on its calendar of events as 15 dedicated cyclists conquered the grueling 12-mile and newly introduced 26.3-mile challenges.
These brave riders tested their endurance and determination on a course that featured significant elevation gains and stunning views, which truly put an exclamation mark on competitive hill climbs on the Big Island.
As in years past, the race began at the intersection of Komohana and Puainako Street in Hilo, which set the stage for a physically demanding event. Participants in the 12-mile race tackled a total elevation gain of 2,521 feet. The initial segment of the course posed an immediate challenge — a demanding a 393-foot climb within the first two miles. The remainder of the route continued to test the cyclists’ stamina, with an additional elevation increase of 2,123 feet over the final 10 miles. This section proved to be a true test of each rider’s endurance and grit.
This year, the Hawaii Cycling Club introduced a new, more challenging long course option which spanned 26.3 miles. This course offered a staggering 6,242 feet of vertical elevation gain, starting similarly with a 393-foot climb in the initial two miles.
The real test, however, lay in the remaining 24 miles, which demanded an additional 5,849 feet of elevation gain. This extended course pushed the limits of even the most seasoned cyclists, making it a daunting yet rewarding endeavor for all who participated.
Despite Hilo’s reputation for unpredictable rainy weather, race day offered ideal conditions for the event. Overcast skies provided a cool start for the riders, who were later greeted by bright sunshine as they crossed the finish line.
In the 12-mile race, Kailua-Kona’s Cary Craig emerged victorious, completing the course in an impressive 1 hour, 17 minutes, and 36 seconds. The 26.3-mile race saw Waikoloa’s Daniel Hill claim the top spot with a remarkable time of 1:58:00. Additionally, Kailua-Kona’s Tina Eakin led the women’s division with a commendable time of 2:14:59.
As the excitement from the Hilo Hill Climb settles, cyclists and enthusiasts can look forward to the next Hawaii Cycling Club event, Pedal Til Ya Puke, scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 18.
