A strong-arm robbery suspect was freed on a cashless bail release by a judge Monday over the objection of prosecutors.
According to online court records, Deputy Public Defender Jared Auna made a motion that 38-year-old Benjamin Aldosa Jr., who had been in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail, be freed on supervised release. Hilo District Judge Jeffrey Hawk granted the motion over the objection of Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Son.
Aldosa is charged with second-degree robbery, a Class B felony punishable with a prison term of up to 10 years, upon conviction.
According to county Prosecutor Kelden Waltjen, Aldosa struck another man several times at the parking lot of the Pahoa 7-Eleven store and took the man’s laundry bag. Waltjen said Aldosa left the area on foot but was later arrested by police.
Hawk ordered Aldosa to return to court on Sept. 4 for a preliminary hearing.
