Motorcyclist critically injured in Pahoa crash

Police are investigating a two-vehicle traffic collision Thursday afternoon in Pahoa that sent a motorcyclist to the hospital with critical injuries.

At 2:42 p.m., officers responding to the intersection of Ainaloa Boulevard and Ainaloa Way learned that a mauka-bound 2004 Chevy pickup truck on Ainaloa Boulevard was turning left onto Ainaloa Way when it struck the motorcyclist, who was traveling makai on Ainaloa Boulevard.

The motorcyclist, a 33-year-old Pahoa man, was unresponsive at the scene. He was taken by ambulance to Hilo Benioff Medical Center in critical condition and later medivaced to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further treatment.

The driver of the Chevy pickup, a 41-year-old Pahoa woman was uninjured, as were her four juvenile passengers.

Police think speed and impairment are factors in the collision.

A negligent injury investigation has been opened.
