The Hawaii Japanese Center is hosting its annual Mukashi Mukashi Market in Hilo this weekend.

Traditional Japanese children’s stories often begin with the phrase, “Mukashi, Mukashi,” or “Once upon a time.” In a similar sense, each item at this sale has its own story to tell of its journey from Japan to the homes of families rooted in Hawaii.

As the world changes, many people cannot keep the material items that have been passed on over generations. However, some families hope to see these things go to other homes that will appreciate the cultural significance.

All of the items featured in the Mukashi Mukashi Market were donated to the center by island residents and include ceramic ware, Japanese dolls, books, artwork, kimono, obi, furniture and much more.

Proceeds from the sale support the Hawaii Japanese Center and its efforts to preserve the history and heritage of Japanese and other immigrants in Hawaii.

The Mukashi Mukashi Market will be open for center members from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. today before opening to the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and Sunday at the Hawaii Japanese Center, 751 Kanoelehua Ave., in Hilo.

The Hawaii Japanese Center is normally open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
