Robert Pamplona Barba, 82, of Pahala died Apr. 17 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired welder and union representative for the former Ka‘u Sugar Co., a former football coach at Ka‘u High School, also coached boxing, basketball, baseball and track, started the Ka‘u Greensands Boxing Club and the Pahala Chargers Pop Warner team, inductee of the Big Island Sports Hall of Fame and U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran. Visitation 11 a.m.-noon Saturday (Sept. 21) at Pahala Community Center. Memorial service at noon. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by daughters, Sonya (Roger) Carvalho of Hilo, Sophia (Pernell) Hanoa and Denise (Raleigh) Peralta of Pahala; son-in-law, Joseph Gonsalves of North Kulani; sisters, Geraldine (Al) Villamor and Ethel Takushi of Oahu, Leonora (Carlos) Millandez of California and Virginia (Ian) Kaye of Washington state; sister-in-law, Beverly Barba of Washington state; 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
