Search underway for missing Wailuku River swimmer
Police have opened a missing person investigation in connection with a swimmer last seen in the Wailuku River on Tuesday afternoon at Boiling Pots State Park in Hilo.
Police and the Hawaii Fire Department responded just after 1:30 p.m. to a 1:04 p.m. call about a swimmer in distress.

Witnesses said the swimmer, a man, entered the water below Pe‘epe‘e falls and was immediately pulled under the rapids. He didn’t resurface, and witnesses lost sight of him.
Fire rescue personnel and state DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement began a search of the area. A county helicopter also was deployed.
An extensive search continues today; however, responders haven’t been able to locate anyone.
The swimmer has been tentatively identified by a witness. Authorities, however, are withholding the release of any further information until next of kin can be contacted.
