The 6th Annual NAMIWalks Big Island event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Wailoa River State Recreation Area in Hilo.
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grass-roots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
NAMIWalks is the largest mental health event series in the country, with walks taking place in more than 150 locations.
This community event helps raise funds and promote awareness about mental illnesses. This year’s theme is “Mental Health For All.”
“This is a new, uncharted time for mental health care. We must recognize the significant impact that current events are placing on our mental wellness,” said Susan McGovern, NAMIWalks Big Island manager. “Our friends, family and neighbors can afford nothing less than mental health for all. NAMIWalks is a force because we have to be.”
Everyone is invited to join NAMIWalks Big Island at namiwalks.org/bigisland.
There is no fee to sign up, but registration is required, and fundraising is encouraged.
Pre-walk check-in and registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Wailoa park on Piilani Street, Pavilion No. 3, next to the large pavilion.
Celebrate the day walking with others to show your support and raise awareness about the importance of mental health in our community.
Participants are encouraged to form a team with family, friends, co-workers and clubs. Besides the walk, there will be music, prizes, snacks and water. After the walk, plan a fun day to picnic in the park with family and friends.
Participants raising at least $100 receive an event T-shirt, and 100% of funds raised stay local, supporting NAMI Big Island’s free mental health programs, resources and services.
Donations to NAMI Big Island will be accepted until the end of December at namiwalks.org/bigisland. For information contact susan_mcgovern@hotmail.com or (808) 640-5686.
