Carolina May Griep, 79, of Hakalau died Sept. 18 at home. Born in Lihue, Kauai, she was a retired administrative assistant for Child &Adolescent Mental Health Division, Kapi‘olani Health Hawaii and Community Care Services and loved Christmas and family. Visitation 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Celebration of life 10:30 a.m.-12 noon. Burial 1 p.m. at Alae Cemetery, Section I. Casual attire; flowers welcome. Survived by husband, David Michael Griep of Hakalau; sons, Marc-Jon (Erica) von Gnechten of Hakalau, Derek (April) von Gnechten of Hawaiian Acres and Rick (Denice) von Gnechten of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Heidi von Gnechten Wright of Charlotte, N.C.; brothers, Gary Madrid and Gilbert Madrid of Orchid Land Estates; sister, Cecilia Kuhns of Honolulu; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Leilani Kuuleialoha Holu-Nihoa, 48, of Waianae, Oahu, died Sept. 17. She was born in Heidelberg, Germany. Celebrations of life on Sunday, Oct. 13, in Hilo and Saturday, Nov. 2 on Oahu. Survived by husband, Moki Nihoa of Pahoa; children, Blaize Holu of Waianae, Blayke Holu, Makanalei Nihoa-Holu and Marley Huihui of Pahoa; parents, Larry and Shirley Ann Holu of Waianae; sisters, Larrilynn Holu Tamashiro of Waipahu, Oahu, Lehua Kapihe of Kapolei, Oahu, and Christine Rosa of Waianae; brothers, Lance and Lanakila Holu of Waianae, Kalahauoli Baptista of Tacoma, Wash.; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Emma Kam Shin Lau, M.Ed., FNP, 98, of Honolulu, formerly of Hilo, died Aug. 17. Born in Honolulu, she was a maternity nurse at the former Hilo Hospital, public health nurse, former Keaukaha Maternity Clinic Director and Hawaii Community College nursing instructor. After state retirement she was vice president at Interim Healthcare and manager of the former Catholic Charities Residential Adult Care program for Big Island. She graduated from Kaimuki High School, Queen’s Nursing School, University of Hawaii at Manoa and University of Virginia, and was a member of United Community (Chinese) Church, serving as its treasurer. Private services. No flowers or koden. Memoial donations to the University of Hawaii foundation, CVS Director of Nursing Practice or UH-Hilo Nurse-Practitioner program. Survived by sons, Rian (Pamela) Lau of Hilo and Randal (Yvonne Chin) Lau of Honolulu; daughter, Anne (Chuck) Meis of Washington; five grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Don Shojun Nakamura, 91, of Hilo, died Sept. 3 at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Born in Mountain View, he was retired and a U.S. Army veteran. Private services held. Survived by daughter, Kayleen Takase of Hilo; sisters, Janice Turnburke of Keaau and Emogene (Gerald) Kimura of Kaneohe, Oahu; sister-in-law, Yvonne Nakamura of Hilo; two granddaughters; nieces and nephews.
