The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) girls volleyball season continued over the weekend on opposite ends of the isle. With the regular season slate set to end soon, island playoffs begin within the next few weeks.
Kealakehe 3, MLCA 0
After dropping three straight, Kealakehe girls volleyball got back on track with a straight-sets win over local rival Makua Lani Christian Academy on Friday night inside the Waveriders’ gymnasium. Kealakehe’s size and defensive ability was too much for the visiting Lions to handle. The ‘Riders won by scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-22. Kealakehe’s sister pair of Mahie and Havana Bailey at the net, along with Layla Grace and Ha‘aheo Llantero-Napiha‘a’s defense in the back row, ultimately overwhelmed MLCA.
Now at 6-7 on the season with three regular season matches remaining, the ‘Riders will next have a tough test against BIIF DII powerhouse Parker tonight at Kealakehe High School. Junior varsity will play first at 5 p.m.
The Lions fell to 0-14, and will next play the Dragons at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Honoka‘a town. Junior varsity will play first.
Parker 3, Kona 1
Parker girls volleyball handled Konawaena for the second time in 2024 with a four-set win over the Wildcats on Saturday night inside Waimea District Park Gymnasium.
The Bulls beat Kona 25-14, 25-14, 21-25 and 25-18.
Parker stayed in the No. 1 spot in BIIF DII, still remaining one of the main favorites to win the DII title. The Bulls will play Kealakehe tonight in Kona town.
The Wildcats lost their first game since Aug. 27, now at 11-2 overall on the season. Having previously won nine straight, Kona will aim to return to the win column against Kanu o ka ‘Aina on Thursday night inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium at Konawaena High School.
