The final week of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) girls volleyball regular season began Monday with matches across the isle. Official BIIF playoff brackets will become official after the last match is played Thursday night. Playoffs will begin Friday.

Konawaena 3, Ehunui 0

Konawaena girls volleyball notched its third consecutive win after handling the Ehunio ‘Io in straight sets inside Old Kona Airport’s Kekuaokalani Gymnasium. The Wildcats won by scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-16.

With the win, Kona moved to 13-2 overall and remained in third place in BIIF DI — behind Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i (14-0) and Hilo (13-1). The green and white will wrap up their regular season slate with a match at 5 p.m. tonight inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium — set to take on BIIF Division II-leading Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Junior varsity will play first.

Ehunui (3-11) wrapped up its season against Makua Lani Christian Academy on Tuesday night at Old Kona Airport. See Thursday’s paper to read the results. The ‘Io have been eliminated from postseason play.

Hilo 3, Ka Umeke 1

Hilo girls volleyball remained in second place in BIIF Division I after a four-set victory over local opponent Ka Umeke on the road.

After Hilo won the opening set 25-15, Ka Umeke surprised many with a 25-21 second-set victory. From there, the Vikings retained focus and closed the final two frames 25-12 and 25-12.

Winners of 10 straight, Hilo additionally played fellow DI rival Waiakea late Tuesday night at home. See Thursday’s paper to read the results. The Vikings will also host the island’s best in KS-Hawai‘i on Thursday. Hilo remains in prime position to obtain a top seed in the BIIF playoffs.

Ka‘u 3, Pahoa 1

Ka‘u girls volleyball got back on track after falling to Hilo over the weekend with a four-set victory over the Daggers in Pahoa town. The 10-5 Trojans remained in the No. 3 spot in BIIF DII. Pahoa dropped to below .500 at 6-7 — but still in the mix for a spot in the BIIF playoffs.

The Daggers shocked the gymnasium and won the first set 25-21, but Ka‘u adjusted and won the final three frames by scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-15.

The Trojans are expected to get a high seed in the BIIF playoffs. They’ll close out their regular season against top-ranked KS-Hawai‘i tonight in Pahala. Junior varsity will serve first at 5 p.m.

Pahoa will conclude its regular season against Waiakea at 5 p.m. tonight at home. Junior varsity will play first.
