WAIMEA — No. 1 (West) Hawaii Preparatory Academy girls volleyball started its Central Pacific Bank/Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II Girls Volleyball Tournament the way it had been playing all season.
The 16-1 Ka Makani hosted the No. 3 (West) Kohala Cowgirls in the semifinal round of the tournament Tuesday inside Castle Gymnasium. HPA earned a double-bye due to getting the outright No. 1 seed in the field.
In the third meeting between the two northwest schools, Ka Makani was victorious once again, winning in four sets to advance to Friday’s championship match against local rival Parker School. The red and white will attempt to capture their second consecutive BIIF title.
Ka Makani bested Kohala in the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-17, but the Cowgirls took set No. 3 25-18 to avoid the sweep. Ensuring a comeback wouldn’t be in the works, HPA dominated the fourth frame, winning 25-10 to close it out.
With the loss, Kohala (11-8) will play No. 1 (East) Ka‘u in the third-place match at 4 p.m. Friday in Waimea, ahead of the title match.
Ka Makani and the second-seeded Bulls will get going at 6 p.m. Friday inside Castle Gymnasium. HPA has been Parker’s kryptonite in 2024, giving the Bulls their only two losses. See next week’s paper to read the results.
Parker 3, Ka‘u 1
No. 2 (West) Parker girls volleyball traveled across the island to Pahala to play first-seeded (East) Ka‘u on Tuesday night for the semifinal on the other side of the BIIF DII bracket. It was the first meeting between the schools this season.
The Bulls won in four sets. With Parker winning the first two frames in close fashion — 25-23 and 27-25 — the Trojans avoided the shutout with a 25-12 statement in the third set. However, Parker closed it out in set No. 4, winning 25-19 to advance to Friday’s final.
Parker (17-2) and Ka‘u (10-7) will both play in Waimea on Friday to wrap up the tournament.
