AARP hosts free ‘Positive Approach to Dementia’ workshops on Saturday

AARP Hawaii is offering free “Positive Approach to Dementia Care” workshops on the Big Island in November, National Family Caregivers Month.

The workshops will teach caregivers how to better understand and handle challenging behaviors.

The Hilo workshop will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Church of the Holy Cross.

Lunch will be provided.

The Kona workshop will be Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Royal Kona Resort and will also feature a resource fair with exhibitors who provide services to family caregivers.

Participants do not have to be AARP members or of AARP age. But they must register to attend the workshops.

Dorothy Colby, a certified trainer and mentor, will conduct the “Positive Approach to Dementia Care” workshops, which teach caregivers to understand what’s behind challenging behaviors teach techniques to better connect with people with dementia.

Caregivers will learn to recognize and intervene effectively when behavioral challenges occur and to develop skills to better approach and connect with dementia patients.
