East-side schools represent BIIF at air riflery states

Hilo girls and boys, Waiakea girls and Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i boys made the Big Island proud Tuesday in the HHSAA Air Riflery State Competition on O‘ahu.

The Vikings’ core four of Sarah Mukai, Kathryn Son, Anuhea Ferreira and Caitlin Inada took second overall in the girls competition — tallying a collective prone score of 756-28, a standing score of 654-8, a kneeling score of 688-16 and a team score of 2,086-52. Mukai was the team’s top individual finisher, finishing eighth overall with a prone score of 189-9, a standing score of 178-5, a kneeling score of 178-8, a qualification score of 545-22 and a final individual score of 625.9.

Hilo’s boys team of Kamamalu Kotake, Jeremiah-James Sioloa-Carvalho, Reyn Kaneshiro and Kuhio Haili-Mizumoto placed third in the boys team competition — posting a collective prone score of 737-26, a standing score of 632-7, a kneeling score of 703-17 and a final team score of 2,072-50. Kotake had the highest individual final score of the group with 537-14, good enough for eighth place.

Also finishing in the top 10 of the individual competitions was Waiakea’s Francis Dela Cruz, who won first overall a year ago. This time around, Dela Cruz placed seventh overall — being named the top BIIF individual finisher in the girls competition. She totaled a prone score of 189-8, standing score of 175-3, kneeling score of 181-4, a qualification score of 545-15 and an individual score of 627.9

Finishing in sixth as the BIIF’s top boys individual performer was KSH’s Kainalu Pakani — finishing with a 190-8 prone, 173-3 standing, 176-2 kneeling, 539-13 qualification and 617.8 final individual score.
