During the week of Nov. 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI.
Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Hilo, eight; Kona, five; Puna, two; Ka‘u, North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 832 DUI arrests compared to 821 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.34%.
There have been 855 major traffic crashes so far this year, compared to 724 during the same time last year, an increase of 18.1%.
So far this year, there have been 27 official traffic fatalities compared to 14 at the same time last year, an increase of 100%.
There was also one vehicular death this year that doesn’t count toward the traffic fatality total, because the victim was killed on a driveway on private property.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
