The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) winter sports season kicked off another week of action Monday with basketball and soccer matchups.
Basketball
Kona 79, KSH 26
Konawaena girls basketball’s 32-point first quarter against Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i set the tone for the remainder of the night in the 79-26 rout in Kealakekua.
Lady Wildcat Aubrey Pak, who leads her group in BIIF scoring at 14 points per game, dropped a game-high 13 points with three 3-point field goals made. Teammates Aaedyn Kauhi and Shaileia Hookahi-Bannister combined for 18 points. Fourteen different Kona players scored.
Kacie Feebo-Santiago was the only Lady Warrior that reached double figures with 11 points. Teammates Shailan Benevides and Maci Lonokapu combined for 15 points.
The Lady Wildcats climbed to 5-0 in league play and 10-2 overall — winning their ninth straight. They’re averaging 76.2 points per game in the BIIF while allowing 11.8. The team’s +64.4 net rating is the best on the island comfortably.
Kona will next host Christian Liberty Academy on Thursday night inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium.
KSH lost its first BIIF matchup, falling to 5-1 in the slate and 7-4 overall. The Lady Warriors are scoring 44.2 points per game and allowing 33 in league play. They’ll seek redemption in their next opponent in the Lady Dragons on Friday night in Honoka‘a town. Junior varsity will tip off first at 5:30 p.m.
Waiakea 49, CLA 26
Waiakea girls basketball cruised to victory over the visiting Christian Liberty Academy Canefire in Hilo, winning 49-26.
Both schools were tied 21-21 at halftime, but the Lady Warriors’ defense clamped up — allowing CLA to score just five points in the remaining two quarters.
Waiakea’s Kaya Texeira, who leads the team in scoring at 12 points a night in the BIIF, added a game-high 16 points. Teammate Mercedes Murray scored 11.
No Canefire players reached double figures, but Mikaili Banetto-Payomo, Shiloh Glenn and Alethia Peralta combined for 19 points.
The Lady Warriors improved to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the league. Thus far in BIIF play, Waiakea has a +4.8 net rating. Its next challenge will be against the Lady Daggers at 6 p.m. Saturday in Pahoa town.
CLA (1-6) will play Konawaena at 6 p.m. Thursday in Kealakekua.
Kealakehe 69, Pahoa 51
Kealakehe boys basketball earned its second win in the BIIF over Pahoa at the Waveriders’ gym, winning 69-51.
DeMarion Olloway, Kealakehe’s leading scorer at 17.5 points per game in the BIIF games, dropped 25 points to lead the winners. Teammate Michael Miller had 12, followed by Kamalu Pabre with eight.
The Waveriders moved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, averaging 80.5 points per game while allowing 40. They’ll next host Honoka‘a on Dec. 30 in Kona town.
The Daggers remained winless at 0-4. They’ll next travel north to face Laupahoehoe at 6 p.m. Thursday on the Hamakua Coast.
Soccer
Waiakea 4, Hilo 2
Waiakea girls soccer continued its hot start with a 4-2 win over local rival Hilo at Wong Stadium.
Lady Warrior Ailani Franklin was the match’s high scorer with two goals. Teammates Charlie Silva and Elina Salai had one apiece.
Aneala Sibayan, the Lady Vikings leading scorer this season, also added a goal.
Waiakea (6-0-0) will next take on the Lady Dragons at 4 p.m. this afternoon in Honoka‘a town, looking to add to its 35-4 goal differential this season. Hilo (3-2-1) will enjoy a holiday break before returning to the pitch Jan. 7 against Kealakehe at Waverider Stadium.
Kealakehe 1, Kona 0
Kealakehe girls soccer earned win No. 1 of the season against Konawaena, claiming the 1-0 victory at Waverider Stadium.
The paper was unable to obtain the match’s lone goal scorer by deadline.
The Lady Waveriders (1-2-0) will look to build off this win, next hosting unbeaten Waiakea at 4 p.m. Saturday at Kealakehe High School.
The Lady Wildcats (1-4-0) take the pitch at 3 p.m. this afternoon at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, taking on Ka Makani.
