The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) basketball season continued Wednesday across the isle. Island playoffs begin Jan. 25. See the paper all month long for the results.
Kona 85, Parker 17
Konawaena girls basketball recorded its fifth game of the season scoring 70-or-more points in an 85-17 beatdown of Parker inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. The Lady Wildcats elevated to 9-0 in the BIIF and 16-3 overall, looking to be in peak form as the postseason approaches.
Kona had four double-digit scorers in the blowout — Caysea Kaupu (12), Haikela Hiraishi (12), Aubrey Pak (11) and Mikela Salazar-Harrell (10). The Lady Bulls did not have any scorers reach double digits, but the sister pair of Briley and Adalyn Ballard combined for 15 points.
The Lady Wildcats average 75.8 points per game on the isle while allowing 12.1. The team also played Kea‘au late Wednesday night. See Friday’s paper to read the results.
Parker (0-6) also played Wednesday night, taking on Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Waimea.
Kona 48, Kea‘au 30
Konawaena boys basketball rebounded after its loss to Honoka‘a in a big way, beating Kea‘au 48-30 in the Cougars’ home gymnasium to get back in the win column. The Wildcats improved to 6-3 in the BIIF and 9-10 overall.
Kona was led by Dylan Nonaka, who scored 17 points. Teammate Joven Young added 10.
On Kea‘au’s side, Jaizaiah Pahinui-Willets scored 17.
In BIIF play, the Wildcats average 61.4 points per game while allowing just over 46. They’ll next face Kealakehe on Friday night at Waverider Gym.
The Cougars (5-3) will next face Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i on Friday at home. Junior varsity will play first at 5:30 p.m.
Waiakea 64, Laupahoehoe 19
Waiakea boys basketball won its second consecutive game by a score of 64-19 over Laupahoehoe in Hilo. The Warriors moved to 5-2 in the BIIF, while the Seasiders moved to a winless 0-9.
Waiakea’s 29-4 run in the first quarter set the tone for the rest of the night, and Laupahoehoe could not recover. The Seasiders failed to score double-digit points in any of the four quarters.
Swingman Josiah Amuimuia, who averages 12 points per game, scored a game-high 17 points, while teammate Jayzen Hough had 10. Ethan Hough, Kolton Manarpaac, Espn Pacheco and Xayden Franco combined for 24. The Warriors average over 58 points per game this season.
Jayden Peters led Laupahoehoe with 10 points, while Xavier Abair and Tomcen Parel combined for nine.
Waiakea will next take the floor against HPA on Tuesday inside Castle Gymnasium in Waimea. The Seasiders will return to action against Parker at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Waimea.
