The first snowfall of 2025 arrived on Maunakea late last week.

The National Weather Service placed the Big Island summits under a winter weather watch from late Wednesday through Friday. While the watch expired on Friday, some snow coverage remains atop the Maunakea summit and could be seen today from Hilo.

The NWS forecasted snowfall between 4 inches and 2 feet as last week’s low pressure system progressed.

Currently, the Maunakea Access Road is open to traffic after road crews conducted snow and ice removal.
