Police have identified the motorcyclist who died in a traffic collision involving a dump truck in Pahoa on Feb. 3 as 36-year-old Wallace Zimmerman of Pahoa.

Officers responding to a reported traffic collision at 3:38 p.m. learned that a motorcycle operated by Zimmerman was southbound on Keaau-Pahoa Road (Highway 130) when he began passing multiple vehicles on the mauka shoulder. The motorcyclist then collided with a 2020 Peterbilt dump truck that was making a right turn into a driveway near the Pahoa police and fire stations.

Zimmerman was unresponsive at the scene and transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 7:23 p.m.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

At this time, police believe speed and alcohol and/or drugs are possible factors in this collision. Zimmerman was not wearing a helmet.
