Vikings win in four sets; Bulls and ‘Riders sweep

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) boys volleyball season continued Wednesday with matches across the isle. Matches will resume today in Hilo and Kapa‘au. See the BIIF schedule on Page 3B to see the remainder of this week’s matchups.

Hilo 3, Ka‘u 1

After dropping the opening set 26-24, Hilo boys volleyball adjusted and won three consecutive frames to win the four-set match against Ka‘u in Hilo town. The Vikings improved to an unbeaten 4-0, while the Trojans dropped to 3-2.

Hilo won its sets by scores of 25-12, 25-21 and 25-16.

The Vikings will host local rival Waiakea tonight, with junior varsity playing first at 5 p.m. Ka‘u will have the rest of the week off before returning to the floor against Christian Liberty Academy on Thursday night in Kea‘au.

Parker 3, Kohala 0

After falling to Konawaena in four sets last week, Parker boys volleyball redeemed itself by sweeping Kohala inside Waimea District Gymnasium.

The Bulls routed the Cowboys by scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-16. Parker improved to 3-1 in the early season, while Kohala remained winless at 0-2.

The Bulls next return to the court against the Dragons on Tuesday night in the Honoka‘a Armory. The Cowboys will seek their first win against Kanu o ka ‘Aina at 5 p.m. tonight at home.

Kealakehe 3, Honoka‘a 0

Kealakehe boys volleyball bounced back in a dominant way after falling to Hawaii Prep in five sets last week — sweeping the hosting Dragons in the Honoka‘a Armory.

The winning Waveriders won by scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-21.

Now at 1-1, Kealakehe will aim to soar above .500 with its next match against Kanu tonight, while Honoka‘a (1-3) will seek redemption against Parker on Tuesday night in Waimea.

JV: Honoka‘a wins 2-0 — 25-19, 25-18.
