BIIF volleyball: Vikings and Warriors sweep; ‘Riders and Ka Makani win in four
The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) boys volleyball season continued over the weekend with matchups across the isle. The season resumes today, see the paper all week for updates.
Hilo 3, CLA 0

Another match, another win for Hilo boys volleyball.
The Vikings secured their fifth sweep of the season Saturday morning against the hosting Christian Liberty Canefire in Kea‘au — improving to an island-best 8-0 this season.
Hilo won by set scores of 25-7, 25-15 and 25-19. The Vikings will next visit Kamehameha-Hawaii on April 8 in Kea‘au.
CLA, who has lost four straight, next play the Daggers on Friday in Pahoa town.
Waiakea 3, Connections 0
Waiakea boys volleyball made quick work in its Saturday morning home match against Waiakea in Hilo town — winning in straight sets. The winning Warriors improved to 4-1, while the ‘Io remained winless at 0-7.
Waiakea won by set scores of 25-14, 25-7 and 25-12 to finish the job quickly.
The Warriors are back in action tonight against KSH at Waiakea High School.
Kealakehe 3, Kona 1
Kealakehe boys volleyball won its third consecutive match after beating the visiting Konawaena Wildcats in four sets Friday inside the Waveriders’ gymnasium. Kealakehe improved to 3-1, while Kona suffered its first loss of the year.
The Wildcats won the first set 25-20, but the ‘Riders adjusted and went on a run — winning the final three sets 25-21, 26-24 and 25-23.
Kealakehe next takes the court Wednesday against Parker School at home, while Kona will look to get back in the win column against Hawaii Preparatory Academy tonight inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium.
JV: Kealakehe wins 2-0 — 25-15, 25-22.
HPA 3, Honoka‘a 1
HPA boys volleyball won its second straight match after handling the hosting Dragons in four sets inside the Honoka‘a Armory, moving to 3-1 in the early season. The Dragons fell to 1-5, losing their third consecutive.
Ka Makani won the first set 25-19, but Honoka‘a soon countered with a 25-20 second-frame victory. HPA adjusted and went to work for the remainder of the night — winning 25-21 and 25-17 to close the match.
The red and white will be back against the Wildcats tonight, while the Dragons will look to find life against Kona on April 9 in Kealakekua.
JV: HPA wins 2-1 — 25-19, 20-25, 25-17.
