HILO — The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) held meet No. 5 of the season on Saturday at Waiakea High School, and many of the usual stars from the previous weeks shined on the track and in their field events. It was the second time this season that Waiakea has hosted a meet.
Konawaena speedster Violet Schaut had another strong day, winning the girls 100-meter for the fifth time in 2025 with a finish of 12.20 seconds. The junior was also part of the 4×100-meter relay team of Kaella Masters, Dasha Kala and Jazmin Fillmore that won with a time of 48.98 seconds.
The same relay team additionally posted the fastest time in the state in the 4×400, finishing in a season-best 4:04.35. Schaut has won 10 individual races this season and 17 in total.
Hawaii Preparatory Academy junior Kirra Geesey also had another dominant day on the track, winning the girls 800, 1,500, 4×800 and 4×400-meter relays. Her 1,500-meter time of 5:04.82 currently stands as the ninth-best in Hawaii. Geesey has won four individual races this season.
Kealakehe junior Jackson Rigg posted the 24th-best time in the state after winning the boys 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.15 seconds. He also won the 200-meter race for the fourth time this season, racing in 23.04 seconds.
Hilo senior Kekaihulali Halpern won the girls 400 for the first time this season, finishing in 1:01.32. Over in the boys 400, Kealakehe junior Carl Trinidad posted the fourth-best time in the state in his 50.76-second win. Trinidad has won the 400 twice this season.
Waiakea junior Shane Tominaga dominated the long distance running, winning the boys 1,500-meter run in 4:22.05 and reaching a season-best time in his win in the 3,000 (9:32.11). The time was also the 14th-best in Hawaii. Tominaga has won seven individual events in 2025.
HPA junior Christian Rhodes highlighted the hurdles events, finishing with a personal-best time of 43.02 seconds in the boys 300-meter hurdles. It was his first hurdles win of the season.
Rhodes also placed first in the long jump, leaping 6.35 meters (20-10.00).
St. Joseph senior Amari Wiedemeier had himself a day on the track and in his field events, winning the boys 800-meter run in 2:04.99 and boys triple jump with a leap of 12.40 meters (40-08.00).
Wiedemeier’s sibling, freshman Analei Wiedemeier, matched her brother with two individual wins — a personal record in the girls discus with a throw of 30.81 meters (101-01) and launching the fifth-longest shot put throw in the state with a distance of 10.92 meters (35-10.00).
Kona senior Elias Malapit won the boys discus for the fourth time this season, hauling a personal-best distance of 47.85 meters (157-00). The throw was the fourth-longest in the state.
HPA senior Elaina Head completed a hat trick of first-place finishes, winning the girls long jump with a personal-best distance of 5.09 meters (16-08.50), the girls triple jump with a leap of 10.39 meters (34-01.00) and the girls high jump in 1.60 meters (5-03.00).
Head has won 13 individual field events this season, continuing to add to her resume as one of the best athletes in Hawaii.
The field events were rounded out with Kealakehe junior Kurtis Compton winning the boys high jump with a personal-best attempt (5-03.00) and Hilo junior Cyrus Jarrett clinching the boys pole vault with a personal-record launch of 3.05 meters (10-00.00).
