The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) spring sports season continued Thursday with boys volleyball and flag football matchups across the isle. Volleyball playoffs begin in a few weeks, while flag football postseason begins today at Konawaena and Hilo High School.
Volleyball
Hilo High boys volleyball reached double-digit wins after a straight-sets sweep over Connections on Thursday night inside the Vikings’ gymnasium. Hilo stayed unbeaten at 10-0 — collecting its second win over connections and sixth straight-sets victory.
The Vikings played strong defense on either side of the net, winning by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-8.
The ‘Io dropped to 0-11, still in search of win No. 1 of 2025.
Hilo is back on the court against Ka‘u on Wednesday at home. The Vikings are 1-0 against the Trojans this season after beating them in four sets.
Connections plays Waiakea on Monday night in Hilo town. The ‘Io were swept by Waiakea on March 29.
The Waiakea Warriors also took the floor late Thursday night, hosting Kea‘au. The Warriors beat the Cougars in straight sets — 25-22, 25-19 and 25-20. It was Waiakea’s fifth straight win and third sweep of the season.
The Warriors moved to 7-1, and will next play Connections early next week. Kea‘au fell to 1-10, dropping its fifth straight. The Cougars play Christian Liberty Academy on Tuesday at Kea‘au High School.
Flag football
On Thursday in Waimea, Hawaii Preparatory Academy girls flag football won its fourth straight game in a 49-0 rout of local rival Parker School. It was Ka Makani’s highest-scoring affair of the season by a mile, ultimately improving to 5-1.
HPA is averaging 23 points per game while allowing 5.3. Ka Makani is locked into the No. 2 seed in the west division, slated to face third-seeded KSH in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. this morning at Hilo High. See the paper next week to read the results.
On the opposite end of the island, Waiakea girls flag football improved to 5-1 on the season after a 26-13 victory over Ka‘u in Hilo town. The game was televised on K5.
The Lady Warriors earned the No. 2 seed in the east division, set to play the quarterfinals against Honoka‘a at 11 a.m. this morning at Konawaena’s Julian R. Yates Field.
