KAILUA-KONA — Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Kona Orchid Society next month at the club’s annual Mother’s Day Orchid Show and Plant &Craft Sale.
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Makaeo Pavilion at Kona Old Airport State Recreational Area.
Admission is $2 cash, and the first 300 attendees will receive a free orchid plant.
A $20 “early bird admission is 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and offers up to 100 attendees exclusive first access to sale plants and a complimentary cup of coffee. Buy early bird tickets: konaorchidsociety.squarespace.com.
This event includes a display of blooming orchids — bring your camera — by club members and a sale presenting a wide selection of healthy plants from orchid growers hailing across Hawaii Island.
“In addition to numerous orchid varieties from eight vendors, choose from cactus, succulents, air plants, anthuriums, heliconia, bonsai, protea, bedding plants, bamboo, fruit and forest trees,” KOS organizer Bob Zeller said in a press release. “We’ll also be offering a handy variety of orchid growing supplies and ceramic pots.”
Also for sale will be a wide variety of crafted merchandise: hanging planters, arts and crafts, black pearl jewelry, pottery, stoneware, paintings, stained glass, wood and resin art and fabric crafts. Tasty treats include jams, jellies, pickled veggies, handmade chocolates and food booths.
KOS is a nonprofit organization whose mission is “educating our members and the public about the collection, culture and appreciation of orchids.” Members include individual hobbyists and commercial growers who meet 6:30 p.m. on the second Friday of the month at the Makua Lani Christian Academy in Kailua-Kona.
