The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) baseball and softball season continued throughout the week with matchups across the isle. The season resumes this weekend.
HPA 10, Pahoa 2
Hawaii Preparatory Academy baseball clinched the season series over Pahoa after a 10-2 rout of the Daggers on Thursday afternoon in Waimea. Ka Makani improved to 8-4 on the season, while Pahoa slipped to 8-2.
HPA won the season series two games to one.
Ka Makani logged 15 hits to the Daggers’ four. HPA’s Nishiki Iwai logged three hits, while teammates Asher Anderson, Owen Smith, Leon Kikukawa, Lexi Ni and Ren Kamoshita-Langan had two each. Ed Lustik and Kamea Leleiwi added one hit apiece for HPA.
Iwai, Ni and Anderson all shared time on the mound for the winners.
Iwai leads his team in home runs, innings pitched, wins and strikeouts.
Tripp Kahsen led the Daggers with two hits, while teammates Kelton Clear and L. Haili had one each. Kahsen and Haili additionally shared the mound for Pahoa.
Both teams’ next matchup is to be determined.
Honoka‘a 21, Ka‘u 1
Honoka‘a softball scored 20-or-more runs for the second straight game, blasting Ka‘u 21-1 on Wednesday on the Hamakua Coast. The Lady Dragons won their second straight, improving to 3-4 overall. The Lady Trojans are still winless at 0-6.
The game was called after three innings due to the run rule.
Honoka‘a logged 15 hits to Ka‘u’s zero. The Lady Dragons were led by Brandi Hoopai and Kanai Tolentino with two hits each, while teammates Keira Agdeppa, Jaycia Silva and Kayliah Kauahi with two each. Hailey Coelho, Danica Valera and Kiarah Cacabelos rounded out the remaining Honoka‘a hits with one apiece. Agdeppa was the winners’ sole pitcher in the circle, striking out two.
Both teams’ next matchup is to be announced.
Honoka‘a 10, Ka‘u 0
Like the softball team, Honoka‘a baseball handled business against the visiting Ka‘u Trojans, routing the guests 10-0 on Wednesday at home. The game ended after five innings.
The winning Dragons improved to 10-2, while Ka‘u dropped to 0-9-1.
Of Honoka‘a’s six hits, Jayden Salazar led the way with two hits to go along with five RBI. Teammates Isaac Derego, Chrys Coelho, Chayse Valenzuela and Hauoli McGurn each had one hit.
Derego was the Dragons’ sole pitcher on the mound, giving up just one hit while striking out nine across 68 pitches.
While Honoka‘a’s next matchup is to be determined, the Trojans take the diamond again at 1 p.m. against the Kohala Cowboys in Kapa‘au. When the two schools last met on April 9, Kohala won 9-4.
