WAIMEA — As the season winds down, Hawaii Preparatory Academy is starting to play some of its best volleyball of the season.
The Ka Makani boys squared off against Kanu o ka ‘Aina on Thursday night inside their own Castle Gymnasium, sweeping the visitors in three sets. It was HPA’s first win by sweep this season.
Ka Makani improved to 5-4 overall, winning their second consecutive match. Kanu fell to 1-9, remaining in the cellar of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) Division II.
HPA won by set scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-18.
On Wednesday night, the red and white also took on Kohala on the road, winning in a five-set thriller of 25-21, 15-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 15-9. Kanu additionally took on Konawaena on Wednesday in Waimea, falling in straight sets of 25-10, 25-11 and 25-19.
Ka Makani next takes on local rival Parker at 10 a.m. this morning inside Waimea District Park Gymnasium. Junior varsity will play first. HPA is 0-1 against Parker this season. In the second game of the day, HPA will take on Kanu again at 1 p.m. Kanu will also take on Kealakehe at 10 a.m. this morning. Kanu is 0-1 against the Waveriders in 2025.
Hilo 3, Ka‘u 0
Hilo boys volleyball moved to a BIIF-best 11-0 after a straight sets victory over the visiting Ka‘u Trojans on Wednesday night at home. It was the second time the Vikings beat Ka‘u after handling the Trojans in four sets on March 12.
Hilo won by set scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-22. It was the Vikings’ eighth straight-sets sweep of the season and sixth sweep in a row.
The Vikings next play local Waiakea at 10 a.m. this morning in Hilo. Hilo beat the Warriors in four sets in their last meeting on March 14.
As of Friday morning, the 8-5 Trojans have no regular season matches remaining, and will await their first playoff opponent. BIIF playoffs are scheduled to begin Friday.
