The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) hosted its seventh meet of the 2025 season this past Saturday, holding the event on the beautiful Hawaii Preparatory Academy campus.
Konawaena junior Violet Schaut stole the show once again in Waimea, reaching a personal record in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 55.37 seconds. The time is the fastest in Hawaii this season and the 92nd best in the country.
Schaut has won 15 individual events this season. Her teammate, sophomore Jazmin Fillmore, won the girls 100-meter hurdles with a team of 16.00 seconds. She also won the girls long jump with a maximum leap of 5.05 meters (16-06.75). Fillmore has won five individual events in 2025.
In the girls 300-meter hurdles, Michaela Costales of St. Joseph notched a personal record with a time of 49.15 seconds in her win. It was the junior’s second win in the event this season.
Kamehameha-Hawaii sophomore Judah Kanoa added to his decorated season in the hurdles, winning the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.97 seconds. The time was recorded as the fourth-fastest in Hawaii. Kanoa has won 11 hurdles races this season.
Laupahoehoe’s Tazein Sykes notched a personal best in the boys 200-meter (22.76s) and season-best in the 400 (50.57s). The junior’s 400-meter time was good for fifth in the state.
HPA junior Christian Rhodes put on a show in front of his home crowd, recording the eighth-fastest time in Hawaii (41.15s) in his boys 300-meter hurdles win. He also leaped the third-farthest attempt in the state in the boys long jump, winning the field with a measurement of 6.53 meters (21-09.00). Rhodes has seven solo wins this season.
Hilo senior Kekaihulalai Halpern reached a season best in the girls 800-meter run, finishing in 2:18.58, which was second-best in the state. Halpern has won the 800 twice in 2025.
Elisa Childers stole the show in the long-distance events, winning the girls 1,500 (5:15.75) and 3,000-meter run (11:12.83). The junior has won seven individual races in 2025.
KSH senior Kalamakua Buckley-Francisco won his first event of the season, racing a personal-best 4:32.35 in the boys 1,500-meter dash.
Several season bests were additionally secured in the relay races, including KSH’s 4×400-meter girls relay team of Rhacelyn Respicio, Mikaila Aina, Emma Cootey and Kerilyn Wise winning with a time of 4:17.87. In the boys 4×400, Konawaena’s team of David Hoag, Kareem Walker, Aiden Akina and Paxton Sokham raced the sixth-best time in the state in 3:27.97. Kealakehe’s team of Kekaimalu Macabio, Kainalu Macabio, Noah Rosenbloom and Carl Trinidad raced the seventh-best time in Hawaii in the same race (3:28.78), placing second.
The ‘Riders boys 4×100 squad of Kekaimalu Macabio, Trinidad, Kainalu Macabio and Jackson Rigg raced the sixth-fastest time in the state with a 43.00 time in their win. KSH’s 4×800 boys rela team of Buckley-Francisco, Kaleb Padaken, Brady Gonzalez and Micah Heidenfeldt raced a season-best time of 8:45.71 in their win, which was also the 13th-best in the state.
HPA senior Elaina Head had another strong showing in her field events, winning the girls triple jump (33-05.25) and high jump (5-03.00). Head has won a BIIF-best 17 individual events in 2025.
Kona senior Elias Malapit had his best performance in the boys shot put yet, throwing a maximum distance of 15.70 meters (51-06.25) in his win. The throw earned the nod for fifth-best in the state. Malapit has won the shot put event four times this season.
Respicio also reached a personal record of 2.67 meters (8-09.00) in her girls pole vault win, which was 25th-best in Hawaii. Her teammate, senior Charles John-Hao, won his first pole vault event of the season in the boys field with a leap of 3.89 meters (12-09.00). The vault was 12th-highest in the islands.
The BIIF will host its annual freshman and sophomore invitational meet this upcoming Saturday at Waverider Stadium. The conference trials will be held May 2 at Kealakehe, with the island finals being held May 3 in the same location.
