The Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra presents “The POPS!” at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, at Kahilu Theatre.
This season’s “POPS!” concert brings the drama and beauty of film scores to life in a powerful live performance.
Timed with “May the Fourth” — yes, that May the Fourth — the program features music from a wide range of cinematic favorites. From sweeping romances to epic adventures, mythical realms to heroic quests, the concert celebrates the soundtracks that have become part of our collective imagination.
“When people think of orchestral pops, one name comes to mind — John Williams,” said Artistic Director Brian Dollinger in a press release. “But he’s not the only composer to craft unforgettable scores. This concert celebrates those composers and the movies that brought their work to life — along with some of Williams’ best-loved pieces.”
The program includes selections by John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Ramin Djawadi, Calvin Custer and others.
Dollinger emphasized the emotional power of music in film and the thrill of hearing these works performed live.
“Music adds the emotional depth to what we see on the big screen,” he said. “Without it, we aren’t as awestruck when we first see a Brachiosaurus, our hearts don’t race as much watching a bicycle fly across the moon, and we don’t cheer as loudly when a space station is destroyed. Great film music is lush, inspiring and full of imagination — it’s not just for classical music stalwarts.”
He also noted that “The POPS!” is a welcoming concert for newcomers to orchestral music.
“This is the perfect way to introduce yourself — or your family — to live symphonic music,” Dollinger said. “Young and old will enjoy this year’s program. I think many first-time concertgoers will be surprised by how much they fall in love with orchestral music after hearing it performed in this way.”
