Police: 75-year-old man critically hurt in pickup rollover

Police are investigating an early morning pickup truck rollover in North Kona, north of Puuanahulu, that left the driver, a 75-year-old Kailua-Kona man, in critical condition.

Officers responding to a 1:19 a.m. call today determined that a gray 2009 Nissan Frontier pickup truck was traveling north on Old Mamalahoa Highway near the 17-mile-marker when it crossed over the double-solid yellow lines and ran off the roadway. The pickup then re-entered the highway, struck a rock embankment, and overturned.

The driver, who was was not wearing a seat belt, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital for immediate medical treatment. He was subsequently medivaced to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu where he remained in critical condition.
