The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) baseball semifinals continued Wednesday with a full slate of Game 2s. See the paper in the coming days for more playoff updates.
KSH 15, Kona 5
First-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii baseball advanced to the BIIF DI Championship series after completing the two-game sweep of No. 4 Konawaena at home — winning Game 2 by a score of 15-5.
The winning Warriors posted 16 hits to the Wildcats’ seven. Justin Kubojiri, Braden Gomes, Shiloh Santos and Iokepa Martines each logged three hits for KSH, while teammates Noah Palea, Keagan Pacheco, Kaikoa Nobriga and Dayton Hanson each had one.
Palea, Gomes and Hanson all shared time on the mound for the Warriors, with Palea getting the win after allowing four hits and two runs.
Over on Kona’s side, Hayden Nishida, Kolt Baptista, Armenio Blanco, Maika Akamu, Tate Garana, Tylan Corbin and Aycen Blanco all had one hit.
Koa Nakagawa and Stephen Amafala-Marquard split time on the mound for the Wildcats.
Now at 11-0-1 on the season, KSH will face fellow east-side rival No. 3 Waiakea for the island crown. In the two matchups between the schools this season, KSH won 4-2 on April 1 and tied 0-0 on March 24.
Kona’s season ended at 5-7.
Waiakea 9, Hilo 5
Like KSH, Waiakea baseball completed the two-game sweep of second-seeded Hilo, winning Game 2 by a score of 9-5. The series win came as ultimate vengeance for the Warriors, who fell to the Vikings twice in the regular season.
Waiakea posted 13 hits to Hilo’s seven and committed four less errors. Ivor Brooks led the Warriors with four hits, while teammates Jesse Inouye, Boston Kobayashi and Clemson Julian logged two hits each. Jerrell Alston, Tycen Baruela and Kalama Ulibas added one hit apiece for the Warriors.
Logan Doran was named the game’s winning pitcher after allowing seven hits and five runs across seven innings, striking out six.
Cole Hatayama and Ghage Dequep spearheaded the Vikings with two hits each, followed by Axel Akau, Hunter Pangelinan and Tyson Santiago with one apiece.
Santiago and Talus Sato were Hilo’s pitchers on the mound.
The Warriors will meet up again with KSH for the DI crown, improving their record to 6-3-1. The Vikings season has ended at 7-5.
Honoka‘a 8, Kohala 0
First-seeded Honoka‘a baseball blanked No. 4 Kohala by a score of 8-0 in its Game 2 DII semifinal, officially advancing to the DII championship series.
Of the Dragons’ 12 hits, Donovan Valera and Kiakahi Lindsey led the way with three each. Chrys Coelho added two hits, while teammates Josyah Napoleon-Umeda, Jaydan Salazar, Isaac Derego and Ezekiel Hood rounded out the rest of Honoka‘a hits with one each.
Derego was named the game’s winning pitcher after allowing no runs and three hits while striking out six. Napoleon-Umeda pitched the final three innings, allowing just two hits while striking out nine.
Kamalu Cummins, Hezekiah Wilson, Kaimana Nakamura, E. Hook and K. Reyes each had one hit for the Cowboys. Wilson and Reyes shared time on the mound.
Honoka‘a improved to 12-2 on the season, while Kohala ended its season at 1-11-1.
Pahoa 6, HPA 5
Pahoa baseball edged Hawaii Prep 6-5 in Game 2 of the DII semis, winning the series 2-0 and advancing to play Honoka‘a in the championship series.
The Daggers logged nine hits to Ka Makani’s eight. George Kocher and L Haili led the winners with two hits each, while Tripp Kahsen, Cash Cohen and Kelton Clear had one apiece.
Pahoa went through four pitchers on the mound, but Kahsen was given the win after allowing two hits and one run while striking out seven across 4.6 innings.
Kamea Leleiwi and Lex Ni led HPA with two hits each, while teammates Ed Lustik, Nishiki Iwai, Leon Kikukawa and Miron Amanai logged one hit apiece.
Lustik and Anderson shared the mound for Ka Makani.
Moving to 10-3 on the season, the Daggers will face the Dragons once again for the DII crown. Pahoa is 2-1 against Honoka‘a this season.
HPA’s season ended at 8-6.
