Hawaii Women Lawyers honored Hamakua attorney Jo Kim with its prestigious Outstanding Woman Lawyer Award for 2011 at the group’s annual awards ceremony on Oahu in April. Kim resides and practices law in Paauilo Mauka.
The citation that accompanied Kim’s Outstanding Woman Lawyer award pointed out that she and a co-honoree, Shannon Wack, were “the driving force in the creation of Self-Help Centers throughout the state … and took the lead to bring this idea to Hawaii and to expand the self-help services already provided through the Judiciary by involving pro bono attorneys [in furnishing legal information to persons without lawyers who need professional assistance].”
The Hawaii Women Lawyers added that Kim “has a long history of working in legal services. She is a co-founder of Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii and the Domestic Violence Legal Hotline (now Domestic Violence Action Center).”
Kim, the mother of three Honokaa High School graduates, coached the Honokaa Girls Varsity Soccer Team from 2002 through 2011, and was named Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2008.
