Firefighters Thursday continued to douse hotspots remaining from a brush fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon north of Hina Lani Street in Kailua-Kona.
The fire was estimated at 400 acres Thursday afternoon, according to the Fire Department’s West Hawaii Battalion Chief Ty Medeiros. It is listed as contained and under control. It burned an area stretching north from Hina Lani Street to Hulikoa Road.
According to the department, the blaze broke out about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in vacant land north of the road’s intersection with Kamanu Street. An evacuation ordered for residents of the Kaloko Transitional Housing, located mauka of the Kaloko Light Industrial Area, was canceled about 8 p.m. Wednesday.
On Thursday, conditions remained hot and dry but winds were favorable, Medeiros said. A Hawaii County helicopter provided water drops throughout the day.
Eight firefighters were scheduled to monitor the fire throughout the night and quash any flare-ups, Medeiros said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Medeiros said. He noted the department suspects fireworks may have been involved, but no evidence supporting that suspicion has been found.
