During the week of May 20-26, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 9; Kona, 6; South Kohala, 2; Puna and North Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 534 DUI arrests compared to 585 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.7 percent.
There have been 558 major accidents so far this year compared to 612 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been 13 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 14 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.1 percent.
To date, one of the fatalities has been linked to drugs only, one more to alcohol only, and two have been linked to drivers under a combination of alcohol and drugs.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
