Hawaii County has hired Hawaii Dredging and Construction Co. to repair a one-lane bridge over Hakalau Stream.
The county closed the bridge last February because of erosion around its foundation, prompting the closure of Hakalau Beach Park.
Barett Otani, county Public Works spokesman, said in an email that a preconstruction meeting took place Thursday morning. The company is being given an estimated notice to proceed in late February or early March.
He said that’s just an estimate because the county is awaiting “approvals of documents and material certifications from all affected state and federal agencies.”
Otani said the $1.6 million project is federally funded.
Once work starts, it’s expected to take 40 working days to complete.
The project previously was delayed to avoid impacting the Hawaiian hawk’s breeding season.
