The County of Hawaii’s Immigration Information Office is seeking the names of those who have taken the oath of U.S. citizenship since last September. These individuals will be honored at the traditional Citizenship Day ceremony at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the Aupuni Center conference room at 101 Pauahi St. in Hilo.
“Citizenship Day is a federal observance established by Congress in 2004,” said Rose Bautista, county immigration specialist. “It is celebrated throughout the country as a day to honor and celebrate the privileges and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship. It also serves as a means for American citizens to express their pride in their citizenship.”
“Those who were naturalized by the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), in Honolulu from September 2012 to September 2013 are encouraged to participate in this auspicious ceremony,” explained Lorraine Godoy, vice president of the Exchange Club of Hilo. The event is part of the club’s Americanism Initiative.
