A Waimea man was killed Sunday in a two-vehicle crash on Kawaihae Road near the 64-mile marker.
Hawaii Police Department, responding to a 10 p.m. call, determined a 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle operated by Ryan Estvanik, 29, of Waimea was traveling east on Kawaihae Road before crossing the center line and colliding head-on with a 2014 Ford sedan being operated by an unnamed 44-year-old Waimea man, who was traveling west.
Estvanik was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the sedan sustained minor injuries. He was treated and released at the scene.
According to police, speed appears to be a factor in the crash, but it’s not known if alcohol was a factor. An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
Anyone who might have witnessed the crash should contact Officer Justin Hooser at 326-4646, ext. 229. Those who want to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
This was the 15th official traffic fatality on Hawaii Island so far this year compared with 19 in the same time period last year, according to police.
