Gov. David Ige will sign a bill today that invests $500,000 into computer science education in public schools and creates opportunities for students to learn STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills.
The governor will sign House Bill 2607, which will require the state Department of Education to develop and implement a statewide computer science curriculum for students in grades K-12 and ensures each public high school offers at least one computer science course during each school year beginning in 2021.
Up to $500,000 will be allocated in the 2018-19 fiscal year to develop the computer science curricula plan, offer computer science classes and contract for computer science teacher development programs, also called for in the bill.
