Tropical Storm Lane continues to intensify as it churns toward Hawaii.
As of 5 a.m. today, the center of Lane was 1,935 miles east-southeast of Hilo, carrying maximum sustained winds of 60 mph with higher gusts and traveling west at 14 mph. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 mph from the center.
Lane is now forecast to become a hurricane on Friday and could become a major hurricane over the weekend.
The storm is expected to cross into the Central Pacific on Saturday and become a major hurricane. On its projected path, it will likely pass south of the islands, although forecasters say it’s still too early to predict with any certainty.
