Some voluntary evacuations urged during heavy rains
KOLOA, Kauai — Emergency officials urged some residents in south Kauai to evacuate Tuesday because heavy rains were causing streams to rise.
A shelter is open.
The National Weather Service said leftover moisture from Tropical Depression Lane was bringing rain to the island.
The NWS recorded nearly 18 inches in one part of Kauai during a 24-hour period ending Tuesday afternoon.
Meteorologist Matt Foster says drier air later Tuesday into today would bring some relief.
Firefighters put out early morning fire at apartment building
HONOLULU — Firefighters responded to an early morning fire Tuesday at a two-story apartment building in Moiliili, Oahu.
At 1:33 a.m. Tuesday, 11 Honolulu fire units responded to the fire at 713 Hausten St. Upon arrival, firefighters found the second floor fully involved with fire. Three families with a total of 12 occupants safely escaped without injuries.
The fire was brought under control at 2:18 a.m. and fully extinguished at 3 a.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Estimated damages were not immediately available.
Raw sewage released into Kapalama stream
HONOLULU — Crews responded early Tuesday morning to a sewer overflow at 1015 N. School St. in Honolulu that sent raw wastewater into a storm drain that empties into Kapalama stream and eventually Honolulu Harbor.
City environmental services crews received a call at 3:17 a.m. and were able to stop the discharge by 6 a.m.
A total of 32,925 gallons of raw wastewater came out of a manhole on North School Street after wet weather overloaded a 36-inch pipe. About 31,725 gallons went into a storm drain.
Warning signs were posted and city crews are taking water samples.
The state Health Department also issued a wastewater discharge advisory, warning the public to remain out of waters from the Kapalama canal to Honolulu Harbor.
Murder case opened after man dies
HONOLULU — Police initiated a second-degree murder investigation after a man was found unresponsive early Tuesday in the Ala Moana area of Honolulu.
Lt. Deena Thoemmes of the Honolulu Police Department’s Homicide Detail, said police responded to a report of an unresponsive male found on the ground at a bus stop near the defunct Stats Sports Bar at about 4:15 a.m. Tuesday.
The victim, described to be in his 40s, had contusions and lacerations to numerous parts of his body.
Emergency Medical Services treated and transported the man, who was in critical condition, to a hospital, where he later died.
Positive identification is pending.
Thoemmes said the suspect or suspects are unknown at this time.
