In San Jose State’s first soccer game under the lights at Spartan Soccer Complex, Kalei Tolentino-Perry managed to steal his share of the spotlight.
The former Hilo High two-sport standout recorded his first career goal and assist Monday as the Spartans defeated No. 16 San Francisco 4-1.
Tolentino-Perry, a sophomore midfielder, opened the scoring in the 14th minute, taking a centering pass from Omar Lemus and heading the ball inside the far post.
“In front of the goal we were a little more ruthless than we have been in the past,” coach Simon Tobin said on the school’s website.
Ahead 3-1 late in the second half, Tolentino-Perry gathered the pass and shot it off the far post, according to a release. Willy Miranda found on the loose ball and scored his second goal with seven minutes left to play.
Tolentino-Perry, the BIIF Division I football offensive player of the year in 2016, has played in all six matches for Division I San Jose State (2-3-1), starting four, after getting into two matches as a freshman.

Tennis
Hawaii Prep alum Mailani Neal has been named a captain of the women’s tennis team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., after playing No. 1 singles last season as a junior.
The Engineers open the fall portion of their schedule Wednesday.
