The UH-Hilo women’s soccer team featured strong defense again and found just enough offense at the last minute.
The Vulcans edged the Saint Martin’s 2-1 in a nonconference overtime game on Tuesday at Lacey, Wash., winning their third straight and following its standard of allowing no more than one goal.
With less than five minutes left and down 1-0, UHH’s Callye Lahmann scored to send the game into overtime.
About five minutes into OT, Tiera Arakawa’s corner kick found Jaimie Salas, who scored the game-winner from five yards out.
The Vulcans (4-1-2) outshot the Saints (4-6), 23-9, including 15-1 in the first half. However, Saint Martin’s made good on that one shot for a score and a 1-0 halftime lead. That later disappeared with UHH’s perseverance.
“I think they showed a bunch of determination and persistence to keep working to get those goals,” UHH coach Gene Okamura said. “We created tons of golden opportunities but couldn’t finish them and finally got one to sink then got the second.”
The UHH men and women play PacWest games at Academy of Art on Thursday and at Holy Names on Saturday.
