A rocket carrying, among other things, the ashes of a deceased former Hawaii resident, successfully launched Monday after a one-day delay.
Private aerospace company SpaceX launched its “SmallSat Express” from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Monday morning, using a Falcon 9 rocket whose first stage had launched and landed twice previously, an unprecedented accomplishment.
The rocket carried a record number of 64 satellites, one of which was a mausoleum satellite from space burial company Elysium Space. That satellite contains the ashes of about 100 people, including former W.M. Keck Observatory software engineer Doug Morrison.
The launch was initially scheduled for Nov. 19, but was delayed several times, first to Nov. 28, then to Dec. 2, and finally to Monday.
