Police say a 30-year-old Keaau man died early this morning after a single-vehicle crash late last night in South Kona.
Police say a 30-year-old Keaau man died early this morning after a single-vehicle crash late last night in South Kona.
Officers responding to an 11:55 p.m. call determined that the man, who was driving a white 1993 Nissan pickup truck north about 1/3 mile north of the 99-mile marker in Captain Cook, crossed double-solid yellow lines near a turn and drove off an embankment on the makai side of the roadway.
Police think speed is a possible factor in the crash. The man, whose identity hasn’t been released, was wearing a seat belt.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
A coroner’s inquest investigation has been opened, and anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 326-4646 ext. 229.
The man’s death is the second traffic fatality this year compared to none at this time last year.
