During the week of Jan. 21-27, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for DUI. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Three were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona 11; Puna, seven; South Hilo, five; South Kohala, four; and Ka‘u, one.
There were multiple arrests stemming from the 28 DUI arrests — two for driving without a license, four for driving without insurance, one for promoting a dangerous drug and another for marijuana possession.
In addition, there were eight arrests for other related moving or regulatory violations.
So far this year, there have been 77 DUI arrests compared to 73 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.5 percent.
There have been 53 major accidents so far this year compared to 78 during the same period last year, a decrease of 32.1 percent.
To date, there have been two official traffic fatalities this year compared to none at this time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
