HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Treasury Department has awarded $1.2 million to two Hawaii credit unions for financial assistance awards for Native Hawaiians.
U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz said Thursday the awards will give better opportunities, security and stability to Native Hawaiian families.
Queens Federal Credit Union will get $659,000 while Hawaii First Federal Credit Union will get $524,000 for fiscal 2013.
The awards are part of an assistance program geared toward Native Americans.
Treasury officials say the awards help people who often don’t have access to traditional banking.
Individual awards come as loans, grants, investments and deposits.
Kauai seabird group decimated
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — The state says a large colony of Kauai seabirds was decimated this summer in two attacks by dogs and feral cats.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said Wednesday more than 80 uau kani or wedge-tailed shearwaters were slaughtered in their nesting area on the south shore of Kauai in July and August.
The birds are abundant and the species isn’t endangered or threatened.
But Department Chairman William Aila says large feeding flocks of the seabirds help fishermen locate schools of tuna. He’s asking fishermen to speak to their neighbors about keeping their dogs and cats under control so these friends of fishermen can survive.
The department is asking people to keep their dogs on leashes and their cats indoors to prevent such attacks from happening.
Wife of ‘Dog’ denies charges
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The wife of TV bounty hunter Duane “Dog” Chapman has denied verbally harassing a 16-year-old girl at a Colorado lake.
Attorney Gary Lozow entered a not guilty plea Wednesday to misdemeanor harassment on behalf of reality TV star Beth Chapman, who couldn’t appear in court because she was in Hawaii. Her trial is set to begin Dec. 11.
A police report says witnesses told investigators she called the girl “a tramp, slut and whore” for wearing inappropriate clothing at Monument Lake on July 10.
Police in Monument, north of Colorado Springs, couldn’t reach Chapman to issue a summons, so they obtained an arrest warrant July 13.
The Chapmans appear on the CMT show “Dog and Beth: On the Hunt.” They own a home in Castle Rock.
